The Cotinus coggygria, also known as the European Smoketree, Smoke Bush, or Smoke Tree, is a stunning multi-branching shrub that can grow up to 5-7 meters tall with an open, spreading, irregular habit. Its leaves are rounded ovals that are green with a waxy glaucous sheen, while the autumn color can range from peach and yellow to scarlet. The flowers are numerous, produced in large inflorescences that can be up to 30cm long, and are characterized by their feathery plumes, giving the plant its smoky appearance. This slow-growing plant makes an excellent accent in a shrub border and can be planted as a specimen or patio tree. It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant and comes in various cultivars with purple foliage and flowers. The wood was formerly used to make yellow dye called young fustic, and an essential oil is obtained from the leaves and flowers. The plant is adaptable and can be used to extend the spring flowering-tree season into summer before Crape-Myrtles come into full bloom.
