Corylopsis sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Winterhazel or Winter Hazel, is a beautiful multi-stemmed shrub native to western China. It typically grows 10-15 feet tall and features drooping clusters of mildly fragrant yellow-green flowers with orange anthers in early spring, providing a delightful burst of late winter to early spring bloom in the landscape. The flower stamens are shorter than the petals, and the fruits are pubescent capsules containing two small seeds. The obovate pointed dark green leaves are up to 4 inches long and are glaucous beneath, turning shades of yellow in fall. This shrub is perfect for shrub borders or woodland gardens and is easy to care for. It can adapt to any soil type and prefers partial shade to full sun. Winter Hazel is closely related to the Witch Hazel and the Forsythia, making it an excellent addition to any garden that values early bloomers.
