Comptonia peregrina, commonly known as Sweetfern or Sweet-fern, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. Despite its name, Sweetfern is not a fern, but rather a member of the Myricaceae family. It is a nitrogen-fixer and thrives in dry sandy areas, often growing in pine stands. The leaves are long, narrow, and frondlike, with a modified dentate, pinnately lobed margin that gives off a sweet fragrance when crushed. Comptonia peregrina has been used medicinally for centuries and is still used in modern herbalism to treat a variety of complaints. It is also a food plant for several species of Lepidoptera. This versatile shrub can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and is perfect for poor soils, taking sun or part shade. Comptonia peregrina is a great addition to any garden or landscape.
