Clematis Recta var. Purpurea, also known as the Erect Clematis, Ground Clematis, and Ground Virginsbower, is a hardy, free-standing shrub that is a native of Eastern, Southern, and Central Europe. Though it can be trained to climb, this ground clematis is typically left alone to crawl along the ground, producing an abundance of small, fragrant, white fringed flowers in late spring to early summer. Caution must be taken, as the flowers and leaves have diaphoretic, diuretic, and rubefacient properties and are poisonous. However, a homeopathic remedy made from the plant is used to treat rheumatism and skin eruptions. The foliage of this cultivar is an attractive deep purple shade, making it an interesting addition to any garden. This plant prefers well-drained soil and full sun, and is hardy to zone 3. Edible uses include young shoot tips, but some caution must be taken due to its toxicity. Overall, Clematis Recta var. Purpurea is an easy to care for plant that adds both beauty and medicinal properties to any garden.
