The Brachychiton acerifolius, commonly known as the Illawarra Flame Tree or Flame Bottletree, is a must-have for your garden. This tree belongs to the family Malvaceae and is native to subtropical regions on the east coast of Australia. It is famous for the bright red bell-shaped flowers that often cover the whole tree when it is leafless. The leaves of this deciduous tree are variable, with up to 7 deep lobes, and shed after the dry season. The tree flowers in late spring, while new foliage is ready for the summer rains. The Flame Tree is widely cultivated for its beauty, and its maximum height of 40 metres is only reached in its original, warmer habitat. This tree is tolerant of temperate climates and can grow up to 20 metres. The pod-like fruits that contain nutritious yellow seeds, are traditionally eaten by Aborigines after toasting. Add a touch of beauty to your garden with the Illawarra Flame Tree.
