Artemisia frigida, also known as fringed sage, prairie sagewort, and arctic sage, is a unique and beautiful perennial plant with a woody base. It has gray-green leaves covered in silvery hairs and produces aromatic, sphere-shaped flower heads. The plant is drought-resistant, making it ideal for landscaping and erosion control on rangeland. It has gained the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for its foliage effects. Indigenous peoples have also used the plant for medicinal, ceremonial, and veterinary purposes. While fringed sage is a common and dominant species in many areas, it can potentially become an aggressive weed, and its overgrowth can be an indicator of overgrazing on rangeland. However, the plant can recover from wildfire in about three years.
