Looking for a fast-growing tree with historical significance? Look no further than the Ailanthus altissima, also known as the Tree of Heaven. Native to northeastern and central China and Taiwan, it was one of the first trees brought to the west, originally used as a decorative garden specimen. Though it has a distinguishing odour, all parts of the plant have been used in traditional Chinese medicine. It's a deciduous tree, growing up to 100 ft tall with large, odd- or even-pinnately compound leaves, and small flower clusters yielding yellowish-green to reddish flowers. With seeds ripening from September to November, this tree is a great choice for quick growth and a piece of history. It is a fast-growing tree that produces large numbers of seeds, which are easily dispersed by wind and water. We recommend using caution if planting this seed. Keep in mind these can be bought not for growing purposes.
