Acer tataricum, also known as Tatar Maple or Tatarian Maple, is a deciduous tree that grows up to 9 meters in height. This small tree or shrub is highly adaptable to harsh conditions, making it suitable for a variety of environments. It blooms from May to June, with lovely red foliage in the fall.

Native to central and southeastern Europe, as well as southwestern Asia, this species can be found from Austria east to southwestern Russia, the Caucasus, and south to Turkey. It is known for its ability to grow in alkaline soils and withstand extreme climates, including hot, cold, and dry conditions.

Acer tataricum has a spreading shrub-like form with a short trunk and slender branches. The bark starts off as thin and pale brown but becomes shallowly fissured as the tree ages. The leaves are opposite and simple, broadly ovate in shape, and can be either unlobed or have three to five shallow lobes. They are matte green on the top and have coarsely and irregularly toothed margins. The flowers are whitish-green and produced in spreading panicles in spring. The fruit is a paired reddish samara with a wing, maturing in late summer to early autumn.

This species has several subspecies, including Acer tataricum subsp. aidzuense, Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala, Acer tataricum subsp. semenovii, Acer tataricum subsp. tataricum, and Acer tataricum subsp. theiferum. It is closely related to Acer ginnala (Amur maple) from northeastern Asia, with some botanists considering it a subspecies of Tatar maple.

Acer tataricum is often cultivated for its ornamental value and is commonly found in gardens across Europe and North America. In Russia, it is particularly valued in farmland shelterbelts. It has also become naturalized in eastern North America.

In conclusion, Acer tataricum, with its adaptability and attractive features, is a versatile and beautiful addition to any garden or landscape. Whether you are looking for a tree or shrub that can withstand harsh conditions or simply want to add a touch of red to your fall foliage, Tatar Maple is an excellent choice.
