Looking for a stunning and hardy tree to add to your landscape? Look no further than Acer saccharum, also known as the Sugar Maple. This deciduous tree is native to the hardwood forests of northeastern North America and can reach heights of up to 150 feet. Its leaves are 8-15 cm long with five palmate lobes that turn bright yellow, orange, or red-orange in the fall. The tree also produces yellow-green flowers in early spring and double samaras with two winged seeds that fall in the autumn.
Sugar Maples are adaptable to a variety of soils, including light sandy, medium loamy, and heavy clay soils, and can grow in semi-shade or no shade. They can tolerate atmospheric pollution and are hardy to zone 3, making them a great addition to any landscape. While a slow-growing tree, Sugar Maples can live long and are a great source of lumber and fuelwood. Sugar maple, of course, gets its name for having a higher sugar content in its sap, which is boiled down to make maple syrup.
The seeds offered here come from the southern portion of the species' range and are better adapted to growing in zones 7-8. Plant them now to add beauty and value to your landscape for years to come!
