Texas A&M University states:Carolina Buckthorn, Indian Cherry, Yellow Buckthorn, Yellow Wood Rhamnus caroliniana Rhamnaceae Buckthorn is an attractive ornamental small tree or large shrub that is adaptable to many growing conditions. It grows in the eastern part of Texas, usually in bottomlands in dense shade and acid soil, and farther west in highly calcarious bottomlands. West into the Edwards Plateau, it grows in groves on limestone hillsides in full sunlight and much less rainfall. The leaves are a shiny dark green with a pale underside; they contrast well with the bright red fruits that stay on the tree until October. The bark is thin, tight and smooth.
